Leica S2 First Impressions

January 8, 2010 | Chris, News

Leica S2, Leica 70mm/2.5 @ f/8, 1/125th – converted in Capture One 5.0.1, © Jorge Alvarez 2009

I wanted to share some of my first impressions of the Leica S2. Jorge Alvarez , www.alvarezphoto.com had been waiting to test the Leica S2 since it was first announced over a year ago. Jorge asked his stylist and hair/make up crew to put together clothes and props for several different looks. The clothes and accessories were provided by DRESSED HAUTE http://www.dressedhaute.com/ and Michelle Cain Sebastian provided hair/makeup. Jorge selected model Lane Lindell for the test.

New Extreme III/IV NOT compatible

January 8, 2010 | Tech Features, Tips & Tech

SanDisk has been selling CF cards using the moniker “Extreme III” and “Extreme IV” for several years. There is now a new version of the Extreme III and Extreme IV series which does NOT work with Phase One P+ backs running firmware lower than 4.8.

It is not unusual for cameras to not support new generation cards right away. What makes this worth a blog entry and your attention is that the NAME of the card was not changed, so digital techs and photographers who have come to rely on the Extreme III series for reasonably priced, well performing, and reliable cards for Phase One backs need to note the subtle difference in the design of the card. The new cards have “30MB/sec” or “45MB/sec” written on them.

Right now version 4.8 firmware is only available for the P40+ and P65+ although a release of 4.8 for other P+ backs is under development.

Below is an image of both versions of these cards in 4gb capacities:

  • LEFT: the classic Extreme III 4.0gb card which works with all Phase One P+ backs.
  • RIGHT: the new Extreme III 4.0gb card with the 30mb/sec tagline which will only work with P+ backs with 4.8 firmware or higher (currently only P40+ and P65+).

I got your Mini View Cameras!

January 7, 2010 | News, Steve

Today we opened some fabulous packages which included an Arca Swiss M2 MF and a Linhof Techno (the first in the country). I was amazed at the size and weight of these new products. Mini View Cameras have been around for a while, but these 2 new products take the category into an even more compact direction.

Just for fun, I put together several generations of view cameras: Sinar P 4×5, Arca Swiss M2 Monolith, Arca Swiss M2 MF, Linhof Techno. For perspective, I weighed all 4 cameras:

  • 10.3 lbs – Sinar P
  • 9.85 lbs - Arca Swiss M2 Monolith
  • 5.35 lbs – Arca Swiss M2 MF
  • 4.15 lbs – Linhof Techno

The Arca Swiss M2 MF has shift, rise/fall on the rear standard, orbix tilt and swing on the front. The Linhof has rise/fall on the rear standard, shift, swing and tilt on the front. By limiting proprietary movements to specific standards rather than the same movement options on both front and back standards, weight and bulk is dramatically decreased. Gearing is precise and ideal for digital. The M2 MF provides a turn lock next to the focus gear while the Techno has a friction adjuster lever for the focus gear underneath camera.

The machining and fit/finish on both cameras live up to the reputations that Linhof and Arca Swiss have carved out for themselves. Both cameras for the most part are able to accept accessories like legacy lens boards and behave very modularly. An intersting aspect of the Techno is that it can accept 6008 series Rollei lenses with the use of the Rollei Electronic Shutter (similar to how the Rollei Xact 2 does the same).

For those who have been considering products like the  Cambo Wide RS or Arca Swiss RM3D, the Linhof Techno and Arca Swiss M2 MF offer a compelling alternative for those who want a little more flexibility (sliding back, longer lenses) without sacrificing bulk and weight.

Capture One 5.0.2 Released

January 7, 2010 | Tech Features, Tips & Tech

Phase One has just posted a minor maintenance release, version 5.0.2. (download)

The only significant change in this version is a bug-fix for a rare error involving LCCs applied to EIP files.

As of today we recommend you only download/install the update if you use or might use LCCs in conjunction with EIP files. We will investigate further to see if there are any other benefits.

If you do update we recommend, as we always do, to completely uninstall the previous version of the software prior to installing the new version (instructions on uninstalling Capture One).

Windows 3.7.X “Trial Version Expired”

January 4, 2010 | Tech Features, Tips & Tech

Capture One 3.7.X for Windows contains the equivalent of a Y2K issue which triggered on Jan 1, 2010.

If you are still using version 3.7.X we strongly suggest that you upgrade to version 5.0.1 which Capture Integration endorses as being a fast, powerful, high-quality, and most importantly, stable version.

However, in an effort to support customers who purchased Capture One 3.X and do not wish to upgrade to version 5 Phase One has released 3.7.X. There are no other changes to the software other than to eliminate this Y2K10 problem.

Download Capture One 3.7.9 for Windows.

Note that this applies to the Pro and DB versions of Capture One only. There is no fix for the LE version so LE users need to upgrade to version 5.
