Nauticam 645DF Underwater Cam

P65+ goes Underwater for first time in new Nauticam Housing

A few weeks ago I traveled with our company to Cancun, Mexico to test the new Nauticam Underwater Housing for Phase One P65+ with Del Sol Photography. We met Matt Adcock and Sol Tamargo and traveled into the deep country side of Cancun to a Cenote where they like to shoot. For this test they wanted to do a “trash the dress” session.  Chris Parson from Nauticam assisted us in bringing all the right underwater shooting gear and also helped shoot all the behind the scenes video underwater. Capture Integration provided Matt and Sol with a Phase One P65+ mounted on a Phase One DF camera body with a 28mm lens. The shoot was just amazing and the energy both Matts and Sol brought was infectious to all of us that helped behind the scenes. Capture Integration will have this Nauticam Underwater Housing available for rent and sale for any Phase One P+ backs and most 35mm DSLR. Give me a call at 813-335-2473 or email me at chris@captureintegration.com to learn more about how Capture Integration can help you take underwater photography to new level.

LCD Resolutions Explained

January 23, 2011 | Tech

One would think "Resolution" only has one definition, but LCD makers disagree.

A Difference in Definition

To avoid any confusion we want to clarify a difference in how photographers define resolution and how LCD manufacturers define resolution. The manufacturers of LCDs that are used in, among other things, in cameras and photos count the “resolution (total)” as the total number of red dots, plus blue dots, plus green dots used to form the image. Photographers are used to the red, blue, and green dots being overlayed and therefore define “resolution (total”) as the number of total pixels where each pixel represents a red, green, and blue value. Neither definition is right or wrong – as long as the definition is clearly stated (as we are doing here).

So for instance the Hasselblad H4D-40 and H4D-50 LCD is marketed as a resolution of “230,400 dots” but for most photographers the resolution would be more clearly described as having a resolution of 76,800 pixels, or approximately 0.08 megapixels. In contrast the LCD of a Phase One IQ has a resolution five times higher.

But the Point is Points Per Inch

Not to miss the forest for the trees – the real world usability of an LCD is perhaps best related by the Pixels Per Inch (PPI), a measurement analogous to DPI on a printed image. The Phase One IQ Digital Backs have a PPI of nearly 300 PPI – the highest of any SLR camera (including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Hasselblad, Leica) and  This resolution, analogous to 300dpi is often used as a high-end print benchmark. This means that a photographer with a Phase One IQ digital back can tap on his image once and instantly see a 100% rendition of the image that will nearly exactly match a typical final high-end print or magazine use – a very high, but very practical benchmark. For critical applications the zoom on the LCD can be increased up to a 400% pixel view for easy ultra-critical analysis of sharpness.

In addition the color, clarity, contrast, and brightness in sunlight of this back can only be fully decribed by seeing it yourself. Sign up for a Demo (bottom of this page) or attend one of our upcoming roadshows across the country.

The curious can learn more about PPI and see a List of Displays sorted by PPI at Wikipedia.

The Phase One IQ180, IQ160, IQ140

Phase One Announces IQ Series Digital Camera Backs

Designed for Ultimate Creative Freedom

Copenhagen, January 24, 2011 — Phase One, the world’s leading pro photography equipment provider, today announced a bold new generation of medium format digital camera backs. The Phase One IQ180, IQ160 and IQ140 digital camera backs feature maximum resolutions of 80, 60.5 and 40 high quality megapixels respectively. This series sets new standards for medium format camera system handling and performance.
The Phase One IQ180 captures at full-frame 80 megapixel resolution, with a dynamic range of 12.5 f-stops. It is the first product of its kind to feature a USB3 connection, facilitating faster image transfers in the future. The IQ180 also features a FireWire 800 connection, ensuring the fastest tethered capture speeds possible today. For untethered shooting, the IQ180 digital back’s new memory card interface is so fast that it eliminates buffering delays, supporting continuous shooting until a card is filled.

“I am amazed by the image quality I’ve gotten ‘out of the box’ with the Phase One IQ180 on the Phase One 645DF camera. I can create images with more detail and unique looks than with any other camera out there. It helps me develop styles unique to me.”
- lifestyle photographer Jens Honoré. http://www.jenshonore.com/

A newly-designed 3.2 inch retina type, multi touch screen features 1.15 megapixel resolution, providing the highest resolution and largest display of any SLR type camera available today. This means that very fine details can be checked instantly during a photo shoot — for instance using Phase One’s unique Focus Mask and the instant zoom function. The automatic adjustment of brightness and contrast ensures that the display is visible under various light conditions.
Context-sensitive controls, such as the instant zoom function, allow a photographer to zoom into an image using one finger only. Small histograms and highlight warnings can be enlarged to full screen view by a simple touch. The new Focus Mask available during preview helps validate depth-of-field and image focus. The wide format display allows for a full 4:3 aspect ratio VGA resolution image next to histogram, highlight warning, focus mask, EXIF data, and touch controls. This touch screen display is complemented by Phase One’s intuitive 4-button navigation.

“The new high-resolution multi touch screen with its intuitive controls is a perfect tool for checking image quality right at the moment of capture. With this display quality, I can leave my laptop at home, and ultimately this makes my work easier.”
- architectural photographer, Eugeni Pons. http://www.eugeni-pons.com/

Phase One’s patent-pending Sensor+ technology, built into the Phase One IQ180, supports a variety of shooting conditions. One can capture images with full 80 megapixels resolution or, using Sensor+ mode, switch instantly to capture images with 20 megapixels resolution at 4 times higher sensitivity, up to ISO 3200. This flexibility is very useful under low light conditions; there is no need to slow down to change cameras, and there’s no crop or lens factor. One gets the maximum wide-angle performance from the existing lens, higher ISO levels, and a faster workflow.

The new IQ180 suits my work very well. I can use the full 80 megapixel resolution for my high end fashion shots, and the 20 megapixel images I get from the Sensor+ technology give me a faster workflow when I do work for catalogue production. It’s really two perfect solutions in one system.
- fashion photographer, Stefan Kapfer. http://www.stefankapfer.de/

Compatibility is improved between the IQ digital backs and the Phase One 645DF camera body. The power state of the digital back can now be controlled directly from the 645DF camera. An integrated battery charger ensures that the battery is charged while one is shooting tethered, offering more shooting versatility.

Capture One 6 has been optimized for shooting with Phase One IQ digital backs. Together with the IQ series backs this professional RAW converter and image editing software will deliver the world’s highest image quality with excellent color and detail. The software comprises all the tools required to capture, organize, edit, share and print images for an efficient workflow.

APA: Resolve to Connect

January 20, 2011 | News

Wednesday night APA Atlanta hosted a “Resolve to Connect” event. APA Atlanta

Held at Big Studio, the idea was for all elements of the photographic community – photographers, assistants, food, prop, makeup, wardrobe stylists, digital techs, retouchers and models – to get together, connect with each other, network, get some face time. And…it worked! Upwards of 40+ members of Atlanta’s APA community turned out.

*The best man for the job - APA National President Stephen Best.

There was food, music, but mostly, just people getting out and chatting each other up. Exchanging ideas, perspectives and philosophies. It was glaringly deficient when it came to technical talk, gear talk, etc. And that was a good thing. This was business, this was networking, this was relationships.

*I have a good feeling about this guy.

It was great to see some old friends who I had not seen in years, bump into some more frequent chums, and introduce myself to people I’d never met. Let’s hope this is the start of a resurgence for getting out of the studio and engaging compatriots in the Atlanta photographic community.

*Should we do this more often? I think so.

We feel that APA is an excellent resource for the Atlanta photo community and the national photographic community in general. Capture Integration will always be a supporter for  APA and its membership.

*I don't think these two had met before - but now they have!

A Visit to Denmark

January 16, 2011 | News

Following Photokina last year I was honored by an invitation to visit the Copenhagen, Denmark headquarters of Phase One. Because of the amount of work involved in our Photokina news coverage I put these images away and hadn’t looked at them until now. Confidentiality prevents me from posting or discussing much of what I saw there, but I do have a few interesting images to share.

The ferry that carried my train from mainland Europe to Denmark across the Køge Bugt (bay). Yes. that's right - it carried the entire train.

The building is a stately example of Danish style. I got lost trying to enter the building since one wing is under construction.

The entire facility was decorated with customer images and everyone showed great pride in both the quality of hardware & software as well as what customers have created using it.

I can't remember if they said that only a very small number of Light Phases were ever made in a Mamiya mount, or if they said that only test models were made. Regardless this is the only one I've ever seen.

Apparently made as a trade-show giveaway by a Mamiya Distributor this can of Mamiya branded soda had me in stitches.

Please bear with us…….

January 13, 2011 | News

Blizzard of 2011

In case you were not aware, Atlanta and most of the South has been snowed/frozen over for the last 4 days.  In a town of 4 Million people, Atlanta only has 10 snow plows.  As you can imagine, when a large storm hits our area we are not as prepared as other parts of the country.  Furthermore, when the temperature stays below freezing, the snow can not be removed by these 10 plows and we pray for mother nature to run its course and hit our normal temperatures as soon as possible.

With this said, Friday, January 14th will be our first official day of business in 2011.  I am sorry for all the problems and slow follow up that this has caused.  Please bear with us as we dig out of the snowstorm of phone calls and paperwork that we need to catch up on.  Looking forward to talking to you soon………..
