I wanted to share some of my first impressions of the Leica S2. Jorge Alvarez , www.alvarezphoto.com had been waiting to test the Leica S2 since it was first announced over a year ago. Jorge asked his stylist and hair/make up crew to put together clothes and props for several different looks. The clothes and accessories were provided by DRESSED HAUTE http://www.dressedhaute.com/ and Michelle Cain Sebastian provided hair/makeup. Jorge selected model Lane Lindell for the test.

P65+ Test Out West

December 2, 2008 | Chris, News

***Update, late breaking news!***

Surprise I arrive in San Francisco to meet up with Jack and Guy on Tuesday morning and I get a message on my iPhone, “Surprise, Guess What? We are heading to Yosemite in the AM!, Attached are the directions and meet you at the cabin. BTW can you pick up a few items for dinner, Guy is cooking, we need some oregano, pueblano peppers and oh some wine and vodka!”. Also keep in mind Lance that there is no cell coverage, but we do have internet.

I am guessing they kept this as a surprise for me traveling out west personally with one of the few P65+ prototypes floating around so I did not let anyone know of our where-abouts and chance getting hi-jacked.

P65+ preview with Guy and Jack from GetDPI.com

P65+ in actionI thought that it would be great to get some real world experience with the P65+ out in the field. Me being a technical sales person/relationship builder it is not very often I get an opportunity to really have hands on with the gear that I represent (this is no reflection on my knowledge of the products). It is just that I often give up “my turn” to allow others to test and play then I listen to their feedback and sit in awe looking at their images. Now it is my turn to spend time out of the office, actually very far from the office with two well-respected photographers (and current Phase One customers).

So what better way to not only test the new P65+ out then to do it with Jack and Guy of GetDPI.com. My relationship with these two goes back over a year ago when prospect at the time (now friend/client) Jim Stone recommended that I check out their forum. I went over to the website and perused through the topics and information, and of course I was drawn directly to the Medium Format area. I have to say at the time it was sparse. I threw up a few posts, started to get the buzz out about this new forum that I felt had potential because of the people running it and their members were open to new things and helping each other out. It was truly a community that was growing. As time passed I realized that this destination was like its founders, laid back, genuine and full of knowledge.

Over the past year I have had the opportunity along with my colleagues at CI to contribute to the forum and be part of multiple workshops. Our involvement has kind of changed the way I feel people are evaluating their new investments in high-end digital products. Where else can you go on a shooting trip or workshop and have access to multiple Phase One digital backs, camera platforms, lenses and professional advice from seasoned veterans in the industry. It is one thing to hold a new camera system over a counter and get advice from someone who looks at it as a ‘box’, but another to actually use it in the field shooting a sunrise, or models and sunsets along side your current gear.

Anyway I am digressing. The purpose of this blog entry is to document the evaluation of the new P65+ camera back next to its siblings the P45+ and P25+. We have all three systems with us along with a Cambo RS1000 with full compliment of lenses. We were planning to have some other technical cameras, but we can save that evaluation for another time (plus I had to carry it all, already my pack is about 35lbs full of toys and $$$). The important thing is we will be using the highest quality digital lenses from Schneider and Mamiya.

Gear bags between all three of us contains:

  • P25+
  • P45+
  • P65+ (prototype, had to beg borrow and steal to get this bad boy)
  • (3)Phase One 645AF bodies
    • 28mm  D
    • 35mm
    • 55mm
    • 80mm D
    • 120mm D
    • 150mm F2.8 D
    • 210mm
    • 300mm
  • Cambo RS 1000
    • 24mm
    • 35mm
    • 47mm

We Love Visitors Here in Miami!!

September 3, 2008 | Chris

Just a little reminder that if you are in the Florida area give Doug and I a call and we would more than happy to show you around and answer any questions that you may have.
Last week before the holiday weekend we had the pleasure of having Stephen Gilbert to our offices ( GetDPI.com forum member).

Stephen and I have been speaking for many months regarding making his move into a Medium Format Digital solution for his ALPA TC. Recently he decided to take the plunge and purchase a new P25+. He shipped us his ALPA and we attached the new P25+ back onto it and made sure that it was all in calibration prior to sending it back to him. Part of this whole plan was that he was going to be coming to Florida for the Clyde Butcher Muck-About at the end of August. So I suggested he come a day earlier and spend some time with Doug and I. We would provide some advance instruction on his new P25+ system, CaptureOne software and of course take him to one of our favorite local lunch spots Big Pink .

We enjoyed spending time with Stephen and hope that he enjoyed the time he spent with us and of course the walk in the swamp .

We are looking forward to getting an update on how the rest of his trip went.

Cool iPhone App – Virtual Spirit Level

August 5, 2008 | Chris, Tips & Tech

I was surfing the iPhone application store the other day and came across this cool useful application. It uses the accelerometer sensor that is built into the iPhone and converts the data to be used as a spirit level. There is standard screen that has a regular level tool, then one that does X/Y.

I like it and it is handy when I am trying to see if a camera/digital back is level prior to taking a shot and looking at it on screen. It also has been accurate enough for my needs.

The reviews have been mixed on the store regarding this application because there is a similar application available for free vs $.99 in the iPhone development kit SDK. Honestly I do not have the time to play around with the SDK so it was worth the buck.

Direct link to the iTunes store for Level.

Here are a few images of the application:

Sep 16-20, 2008 | Fort Lauderdale – GetDPI Lighting Workshop

July 11, 2008 | Chris, upcoming seminars

I just wanted to give a plug for an upcoming Studio Lighting Workshop that is being organized by our friends at the GetDPI.com Workshop Forums. I can speak from experience that the workshops that Guy and Jack organize are worth every penny. I recently had the opportunity to travel on their most recent workshop to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico (blog entry soon I promise!). If you are not aware of the GetDPI.com forums I urge you to check them out and see for yourself the type of community that they are building for photo professionals and enthusiasts of all levels. Capture Integration is proud to be part of their forum and we plan contributing or technical knowledge and of course all the latest toys for you to play with and use, especially the latest from Phase One.

The dates for the Studio Lighting are September 16th through 20th 2008 at Tye Studios in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Instructors will be Guy Mancuso and Jack Flesher, with David Kipper assisting. The basic workshop format will be as follows:

The format for the shooting of the modules insures each participant has a significant amount of “one-on-one” shooting time with the models; you will NOT be shooting model sets as a “group” of photographers all shooting the same set! Instead, participants will be working in pairs as a team — one shoots and directs while the other assists — taking turns for each studio set. In this fashion, each participant is guaranteed ample time as the directing photographer working independently with the model(s) on any given set.

Note that any camera brand or format size is welcome, including film cameras, but your camera needs to be able to trigger a studio strobe light pack, so it should have either a PC flash synch port or hot shoe for use of a Pocket Wizard or Skyport style RF strobe triggering device.

Space for this workshop is limited to 12 participants and will be offered on a first-come, first served basis.

Full details are at the following link, also check out the site it is full of great people and information:

Hope to see you there.

Wow! 1,014 Megapixel Pano.

April 28, 2008 | Chris

small_districtlab_360.jpg

Recently I had the opportunity to meet Ignacio Gurruchaga of District Lab / in-dependent at one of our events here in our Miami location. Ignacio is both a photographer and high-end printmaker/finisher. His lab has a large 50″ lightjet and specializes in museum quality acrylic mounting by appointment only. In the front of his lab he has a gallery space where he hold exhibits for photographers he prints for. In the back of his space is his lab. On all of the walls you will see examples of work he has produced and also a collection of prints that were generated by old negatives of various formats and glass plates. Most of these were images of Cuba from many years ago. It was like walking through a museum.

in-dependent.com websiteOne project that caught my attention was one that he did for Art Basel this year . He took a 360 degree pano of where his is lab located to capture all of what goes on around it. He has a few neighboring business (an auto body shop and concrete plant to name afew) and a homeless man. This one particular pano (as pictured) is comprised of 26-P45 files stitched together. Once this file was created he printed out 26 – 50″x120″ panels and placed them in the interior of his exhibition space , called in-dependent.It is truly breathtaking the amount of detail and of course the subject mater that captures the personalities of the people and the characteristics of the businesses.

One final note is that this was all produced within a few days from capture to print.

You can view a smaller copy of this pano that is on display at our Miami offices.

For more information regarding this print or other services that Ignacio offers please email him at IG@disctrictlab.com and check out in-dependent.com .

Thank you for the print Ignacio.
