Phase One DF Body

Developed in conjunction with Mamiya (now part of Team Phase One) this new body continues a long legacy of Mamiya 645 bodies, but with entirely new internal electronics and motors. It offers the best autofocus in medium format, shutter speeds up to 1/4000th of a second, flash sync up to 1/1600th with Schneider Leaf Shutter Lenses, and an optional vertical grip, the V-Grip Air with built in wireless flash sync.

Some other medium format brands require that the body and back be “paired” together electronically, eliminating the option to rent a backup body and requiring you to send your system into the factory in order to order a backup or replacement body. With the Phase One DF body you can purchase a body separately at any time. In addition you could purchase a Phase One AF, or Mamiya AFD3, AFD 2, or AFD1  as a less expensive backup body with full compatibility. For instance excellent condition AFD1 bodies are often available through Capture Integration for less than $800 (call for availability and exact pricing).

Phase One V-Grip Air

The Phase One V-Grip Air is a vertical grip for the Phase One 645DF and Mamiya DF camera body. It provides an ergonomic hand grip while shooting vertical images, additional battery life, and a Profoto Air wireless transmitter.

More About the Wireless Air Syncing

This is the first vertical grip to feature a wireless flash trigger, based on cooperation with Profoto. The transmitter is a Profoto Air transmitter. Profoto Air receivers are built in (optionally) to most of the current line of Profoto Studio and Location Strobes. In addition a Profoto Air Receiver can be purchased which can be plugged into any other Brand/Model of strobes.
Most wireless flash devices, such as PocketWizard Plus II units, can only sync at around 1/400th of a second or slower. This limitation is different than the sync speed of a body (or lens) which may be, for instance 1/160th with studio strobes, so for instance a Hasselblad H1 body can sync at 1/800th of a second, but when using a PocketWizard Plus II the sync speed would be limited to 1/400th of a second. Faster shutter speeds on a leaf shutter lens may be used beyond this limited wireless flash sync speed, but only part of the flash power will be seen – so if the strobes are metering at f/11 the camera will only see them as, for example, f/5.6.
