Phase One P40+, P45+, and P65+
Purpose of test
The medium format digital back marketplace can be quite confusing, even for the people who are supposed to be the experts. The only way that you will truly understand the new technology is to shoot any new system side by side the older systems. With the arrival of our new P40+ the first test that we wanted to conduct was a shooting scenario on a technical camera with movements. We wanted to answer the question, ” will the P40+ produce an LCC that was unacceptable.” The answer is clear in our examples, however so much more can be learned from this comparison than just LCC information. We will leave it up the veiwer to determine which relationships are more significant to them. Enjoy!

Phase One P40+ at ISO 50 and ISO 800
Speed, Resolution, and Flexibility
The Phase One P40+ has just been announced. While we eagerly await delivery of our own unit to do extensive testing and evaluation we’re posting these shots provided by two photographers in Denmark for those who can’t wait to look at P40+ files.
For the first time in Digital Back history a new back has been announced only when it was ready to ship. So if you’re interested in a a demo contact us today.

Phase One P65+ at ISO 1600
Taking Medium Format Digital Backs where they’ve never been before
The Phase One P65+ offers a mode called Sensor+ which allows faster shooting, faster display of images when tethered, full frame composition, and higher ISOs while shooting at a very sharp 15 megapixel file size. Using a patented pixel binning technology decreasing the file size to 15 megapixels increases the native sensitivity by two full stops making the back’s ISO range 50-800 at full resolution or 200-3200 in sensor+ mode.
Often high ISO tests are done on a tripod in the studio with flash, which is the exact opposite of the situations where high ISO is needed. Instead our technician, Doug Peterson, went out after sunset to shoot by the street lights of South Beach. Below is a handheld shot with the Phase One body, Phase One 80mm at f/2.8 and 1/125th sec shutter speed. The large area of deep shadow is also unusual in a published test of high ISO.
This was processed with default noise reduction and sharpening in Capture One 4.7 and saved as a 100% resolution JPG (a small web version appears below).
Download the full resolution JPG here and judge for yourself.
You can be sure we’ll be posting more high ISO shots soon.

Phase One P65+
The Highest Resolution. The Largest Chip. The Highest Dynamic Range.

The Phase One P65+ is currently in pre-production, with a few prototypes in existence. Delivery is expected on the first production units in late 2008. Capture Integration was fortunate to host the first public showing in the US of the P65+ and took the opportunity to shoot both studio fashion and outdoor portraits. Below you will find a raw file and a processed JPG. We chose the development settings that we thought best emphasized the subject but you are welcome to download the raw and use your own development settings.
It is expected that once the production units ship, support for raw files will be added to Adobe Camera Raw and the several other programs which can read current Phase One raw files. However, since it is in pre-production the only raw developer which will read the P65+ raw file is Capture One 4.5 (which requires OSX 10.5.5 or XP SP3 or Vista SP1).
This new version of Capture One (http://phaseone.com/Content/Downloads/CO4.aspx) allows enormous flexibility in developing. Check out the Web Contact Sheet generated by Capture One 4.5 Pro showing some of the styles we considered.

Infrared Phase One P45+

Background
This article is about the Phase One P45+ IR which is a version of the P45+ modified for infrared photography. This test is to show the results of using various filters with the P45+ IR. It also compares the visible-only photographs of the P45+ IR with the visible-only photographs of the standard P45+.
In infrared photography the sensor (or film) can see infrared light, which is beyond the visible spectrum of light. It is easiest, though not entirely accurate, to think of infrared light as a 4th color after blue, green, and red. This allows for infrared+visible photography where the camera sees RGB and infrared. Infrared-only photography is possible by using a filter which removes visible light. By adding a filter which removes infrared light such a camera can also take standard (i.e. visible-only) photographs.
Test Equipment - Filters
For Infrared-only: Kodak 89B filter
For Infrared-only: Hoya R72 filter
For Infrared+visible*: Infracolor Orange 099
For Visible-only: 1st gen Phase One IR-Cut filter
For Visible-only: 2nd gen Phase One IR-Cut filter
For Visible-only: B+W 486 IR-UV-Cut Filter
*The infracolor orange filter removes about half of the visible spectrum

Phase One P45+ and P25+
Test Equipment:
- Cambo Wide DS
- Schneider Digitar XL 35mm f/5.6 lens
- Heavy Tripod
Processing Method:
All raw-development was done with Capture One 4.1.1. Files were white balanced using Color Chart at image-bottom. Lens Cast was corrected using LCC. Images were upsized to 16bit TIFFs at 9000 pixels wide (to allow valid comparison between the different native resolutions) and sharpening disabled. Noise reduction set in Capture One 4.0 to 15/30 (which is low). Unsharp mask (100% 1.3pixel 1 threshold) applied to both files in Photoshop.
Testing Notes:
1/15th sec at f11 using ISO 50. 5mm of rise was given
Triggered by Cable Release
