How To Choose Between Eizo CG Series vs Eizo CS Series
Eizo is renowned for making amazing quality displays and have been doing so for many years. They certainly make one of the best displays anywhere for photographic viewing/editing, if not the best. Their CG and CS displays also come with a 5 year performance warranty. While Eizo displays are relatively expensive, they are a critical component of your workflow. Every day, you stare into your display and make key editing decisions on the images you work so hard to bring to their optimal potential.
Since they come with 5 year warranties and typically operate and perform well for many years past that, I often ask clients to compare the Eizo price to their 2nd choice, divide that difference by the number of months they will likely be using that display. Let’s say there’s an $800 difference. Divided over 7 years (84 months), that an additional $9.52 per month they could be using the Eizo every day. I feel that is an important perspective to take into account.
Which To Choose?
One of the few challenges with Eizo is deciding which display to choose. The ColorEdge Series, which are the standards for high end photographic editing, come in two separate families, CG and CS models. CS is the entry model, series with 27” HD displays starting in the $1,275 range (CS2731), and 27” 4K displays starting at $1,835 (CS2740). However, the flagship CG series start at $2,575 for a 27” HD (CG2700S) and $3,475 for 27” 4K (CG2700X).
Eizo offers complete specifications on their website, but it’s easy to get lost in those specs. We made an attempt to filter through some of the most relevant specs, particularly in terms of the differences for the 27” 4K displays. With the price difference, it’s important to note that the CS Series is a true value acquisition, because it shares many of the core qualitative elements of the CG series. But the CG series does take it those extra steps further, with built-in calibration that can be automated and scheduled. 3D Lut vs 1D LUT for more neutral grey tones. A substantially greater contrast ratio and a retardation film for more deeper and more even black levels edge to edge.

Some of the details that can escape notice however, are the addition of 98% of the DCI: P3 color space and the ability to easily switch between that space and 99% Adobe RGB, making the CG Series an excellent choice for still and video editing color space. But even more mundane elements such as the CG delivery 94 watts USB power vs 60 watts are an advantage for charging attached devices.
Any way you slice it, the CS Series is one of the finest displays you can buy for photographic editing, the CG series takes that level and ups the ante with even more color quality, and some intriguing extra features.
