Beginner’s Guide to Tilt & Swing in Photography

Learning to use camera movements is similar to learning how to ride a bike. You get better with practice. However, there are some things you should know before pedaling down the street. In this article, I will focus on understanding tilt and swing in photography and how it visually affects your image.

What Are Camera Movements?


For those who are not aware, the term “camera movements” refers to the horizontal shift, vertical rise and fall, or tilt and swing of your lens plane in relation to your image plane (aka film or digital sensor) and vis versa. On most standard cameras, the image plane has a fixed relationship to the lens plane as if they are glued together. If I move the camera, the image plane (sensor) and lens plane move as one. Camera movements expands the relationship of the image plane and the lens plane, allowing either or both to move independently of the other (so long as the lens has a big enough image circle to cover the size of the capture media.) This produces some photographic benefits through visually adjusting your images perspective and focus.

A Brief History

Camera movements weren’t always viewed as special features. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the dominant photographic tools were large-format view cameras with these movements built in. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that traditional view cameras were rivaled by the growing popularity of the 35mm camera.

While 35mm cameras were vastly more portable and accessible to the public, they sacrificed all of the movements and control available on a view camera. The same way the introduction of the GPS created a generation of people who didn’t understand how to use a map, the introduction of 35mm created a generation of photographers who didn’t understand how to use camera movements.

Jumping forward to the 1960’s and 70’s, Nikon and Canon released the first lenses with tilt and shift capabilities for 35mm, making camera movements available for a much wider market.

Options Available Today

Today, you have multiple options for adding camera movement to your photographic workflow. Most major DSLR and mirrorless camera brands (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm etc.) offer compatible tilt-shift lenses or can be mounted to a view camera. Digital backs can also be mounted to view cameras and technical shift cameras. To explain all of the differences between these options would require an article in and of itself. The key thing to know here is that not every movement is available on every option.

Technical shift cameras typically offer only vertical and/or horizontal shift, relying upon add on components to then include tilt or swing. In contrast, tilt-shift lenses can provide tilt, swing, and both horizontal and vertical shift, but often these movement share a mechanism and cant be executed simultaneously in one shot. For example, on the Fujifilm GF30 T/S lens, tilt and swing share a single mechanism that rotates to alternate between the two. The same applies to shift, meaning you must choose between tilt or swing, and vertical or horizontal shift, for any given shot.

Rotating Between Tilt & Swing

Traditional view cameras still offer the most versatility in this realm. On most cameras, the lens is mounted to the front of the camera body, but on a view camera, the camera body and lens are mounted to separate mechanisms (often referred to as standards). This offers the unique and important advantage of having tilt, swing, rise, fall, and vertical/horizontal shift not only on the front standard (where the lens is mounted) but also on the rear standard (where the camera body is mounted). You don’t need to choose between tilt and swing or vertical and horizontal shift for a single shot. All movements can happen simultaneously and independent of each other.

What is Tilt?

All of these gears and moving parts can be intimidating, so let’s break down the single movement of tilt. Your plane of focus is normally like an invisible pane of glass standing straight up in front of your camera. Tilt tips that “glass” forward and backward, ideal for extending your focus along the ground, landscapes, or flat horizontal surfaces.

This effect cannot be achieved with your standard mirrorless or DSLR camera alone because your lens plane and your sensor (aka your image plane) are both fixed in a parallel line. To achieve this effect one of these two planes needs to stay in its original position as the other tilts.

Look closely at the wooden box my subject is sitting on. Before tilt is applied, it is only in focus near the front, and trails off into blur as you move to the back. As I tilt my lens down, the back of the box comes more into focus, and the top of my toy model camera goes completely out of focus. If we once again think of our focus plane like a pane of glass, you can imagine it being laid down upon the box surface like the white square in the visual above.

Tilt is commonly used for landscape and architectural photography, where you’ll want a much larger area to appear in focus than does in my visual above. However, your image is only technically in sharp focus right at the point where your focus plane sits. Everywhere in front and in back of that plane that looks in focus (aka your depth of field) is really just perceived to be sharp because your camera and eyes can’t resolve the fine details enough to tell it’s not. If your aperture is stopped down to f/11 and you’re struggling to get the full breadth of a landscape or building in focus, tilt can help by adjusting the angle of your focus plane to the angle of your subject matter. Your depth of field also follows this tilt, and in the case your tilt is drastic enough, it will run from top to bottom instead of front and back.

The advantages to this method over closing your aperture to f/22 is less diffraction, and more of your critical subject matter in the area of sharp focus. As mentioned before, your plane of focus is the only part of your image truly in focus. Positioning that plane to run from the front to the back of your landscape lays the sharpest focus right where you want it. Without tilt, your true sharp focus runs from the ground to the sky in one spot, and you must stretch your depth of field as far as you can to get perceived focus across the rest of the landscape. Closing down your aperture also gives you less light to work with, and at a certain point, light rays bend too drastically as they pass through the small opening causing a loss of fine detail (diffraction).

What is Swing?

If you understand tilt, swing is the same idea, but instead of your lens and focus plane tilting up or down, they swing side to side. Once again visualizing your focus plane as a pane of glass, swing turns the pane to face left or right.

As you watch my “through the lens” videos of tilt and swing keep in mind that optics naturally project your image upside-down and backwards on your cameras sensor. Modern digital cameras automatically mirror and flip the live view image to make composing intuitive. Even though the frame appears to pan to the right, I’m actually swinging to the left.

Swing is typically used when photographing an object receding into the distance at an angle such as a wall or other large structure. Swinging the lens aligns the plane of focus directly with the angle of the subject so its entire surface is in sharp focus.
