Hasselblad X2D II & 907x 100C – CFExpress Card Warning!

In Hasselblad, Hasselblad Tip, News, X2D, X2D II

I never much thought about inserting one of my CFexpress cards into our Hasselblad bodies, why would I? The cameras have 1TB of internal storage, and when done shooting, mount up to my computer like an external hard drive. So me, myself and I having not shot this camera commercially, didn’t need redundant or overflow files saved to ejectable media.

We just learned that the recommendations in the user manual should be viewed more as a warning rather than just a recommendation, and to NOT use cards with capacities in excess of 512GB in any of the X2D or CFV 100C variants. The physical size of 1TB cards pushes the standard ever so slightly and will become stuck in the body.(Like, you’re likely not going to get it out without destroying the card, or harming the camera!!) We just had to send a beautiful Earth Explorer body out to service in Burbank that had a 1TB card stuck in it.

Somewhat of a curious design holdover for the X2D II camera, since media cards from several brands in capacities of 1TB & 2TB now exist, and if you were going to make redundant all that you were shooting to the internal drive, you would need instead to run 2, 512GB cards sequentially.

I find the Sony TOUGH card recommendation curious, since the service teams at both Phase One and Fujifilm have recommended specifically against this card series, as the ‘toughness’ of them can cause overheating issues in-camera. That being said, they only recommend the 128GB version of the TOUGH card and for 256GB & 512GB capacities only recommend SanDisk. (I have used a ProGrade 128GB card here with no issues)

The current user manual for the X2D-II makes no mention of these recommendations whatsoever, but the Hasselblad Service Team has informed me that our favoritist new camera, the X2D II carries the same recommendations as the prior cameras.
